Melegis,Lecrin Valley Andalusia Vacation Rentals by Holiday.com
The contrasts in this village house are spectacular. Approaching it via the traditional narrow streets of whitewashed houses in the middle of the village, you drive up to the front door of an unassuming three-storey building. Step inside and the surprises begin. The layout of each floor makes it seem as though the house gets bigger as you go higher. Step outside the back door and it`s like walking into an oasis. Lush grass, abundant greenery, and a riot of flowers and fruit- all leading to and surrounding the pool. What ever time of year you visit, some fruit will be in season: oranges and lemons from January to April, apples from May to July, grapes from August to October and pomegranates from November to February. But there`s more. Through an iron gate there is as much land again. Another orchard, with a small formal, tiled garden and a large summer house facing the evening sun. In one corner of this `huerto`, perches a sturdy tree-house for the kids (sleeps 4!).

The house is a converted village mill with massive walls and beamed ceilings. It is designed for both summer and winter living. For the summer, when much of the time is spent outside, there is a quiet, cool sitting room and fully equipped kitchen leading onto a partially shaded terrace over-looking the garden and the pool. When it is too chilly to have dinner outside there is a second fully equipped kitchen on the 'mirador' top floor with a dining area with views up the mountain, a fire-place and two separate sitting areas. One of these has a small balcony from which you can watch the sun set across the valley.
Things to do:
The Sea: The dual carriageway road from Granada to the sea at Motril is 10 minutes drive from the house. Journey time to the sea about half an hour. The less crowded beaches with sheltered pools suitable for small children are to the east. Going west there are good beaches at Salobrena, Almunecar, and Nerja. These may be crowded at week-ends
The Alhambra
Everybody visits the Alhambra with its fountains, gardens and beautiful cool buildings at least once. The Alhambra has a system of timed entrances to reduce congestion at peak times. Booking in advance is essential. There are very clear multilingual instructions on how to book by credit card on www.alhambratickets.com. Also gives telephone numbers.
Golf Information
There is an 18 hole golf course half-way between Melegis and Granada and a 9 hole course along side the shore at Motril. Details are in the information book in the house.
Skiing Information
The house was restored by the owners as a summer home where they could ski in the winter. The Sol-y-Nieve ski area covers a wide open valley below Mulhacen, the top peak of the Sierra Nevada, with about 3000ft of vertical fall from 11000-8000 feet. With the new road from Granada driving time to the car park at the foot of the lifts is reduced to 40-45 minutes. Skiing is best in February-March when one can enjoy the sunshine to the full. Week ends are very crowded.
